Doing and Being

Have you ever attended a musical concert where several musicians played the same piece? If so, you probably noticed that there were big differences in the ways each performed the same selection. One musician may play the piece technically perfect; the phrasing and timing are played exactly as the composer wrote them. Another musician seems to get lost in the music and interjects his or her own interpretation. The music this person plays seems to come from her or his very soul.

This is the difference in technically perfect performances and inspired performances. The performer isn't just "doing" a concert. They "become" the concert as they become one with the music.

These same differences in performing can also be seen in artists, athletes, sales people, actors and actresses, and NASCAR drivers. These differences are also visible in consultants, coaches, business owners and all other professionals. One person may practice law (doing) while another IS a lawyer (being). One person writes books but another person IS a writer. One mechanic works on your car (doing) while another mechanic knows everything that is unique about your vehicle and accurately measures the health of your vehicle by carefully listening to its engine (being).

Most of us are naturally drawn to people who ARE more than the ones who DO. The ones "doing" will do a good job but the ones "being" will go beyond what is expected and amaze you with the results.

+How can you become a "being" person rather than a "doing" person? Most of us are not born with special musical or artistic gifts. However, each one of us is born with unique talents and potential. Here are a few suggestions to help you become a "being" person rather than a "doing" person.

Identify the things you love to do. These are the things that make you happy when you are involved with them. You become so absorbed in the activity that you forget about time and everything else. Ideally, you feel this way about your work. If not, find others places where you can regularly indulge in these activities. Not only will you have the pleasure of spending more time "being" but you will contribute to the enjoyment of others.

Identify the things you do well. These probably include the things you love to do since most of us tend to love to do things that we excel at. Can you improve these skills? Learn them well enough to do them naturally with a smooth flow. This will contribute to your sense of "being" and add value to these activities for other people.

When you work from a sense of "being" everyone benefits! It's a deeper, richer way to live. If you work a mile wide and an inch deep, you will be all over the map and you will not excel at anything. When you work an inch wide and a mile deep you are "being." You will also be respected for your knowledge and expertise by those you meet.

If you enjoy your work, start now to love it. Put your heart and soul into it and you will transform work into meaningful contributions for your clients and you will attract more clients because of your "being."

Coaching Corner

Q. I want and need to get some coaching to guide me in making some important business decisions. I don't like for experts to talk "at me" or set arbitrary goals for me. How do I select a coach whose personality will be right for me?

A. Ask your colleagues and peers about coaches. Who do they use? Why? Are they getting the results they want? Get the names and telephone numbers of coaches you want to contact. Check with professional organizations for names of coaches. Call several and interview them. Find out how they work. Tell them what you are looking for and what you need. Chances are, by doing this, you will find an excellent coach who will work well with you and guide you through those important decisions.
